Coconut Oil Benefits and Uses

Coconut oil is a versatile oil derived from coconuts that can be used cosmetically or in the kitchen.  There are numerous benefits that this oil provides.  First, it increases metabolic rate (how quickly your body can transform food consumed into fuel or cellular energy) because it provides a quick energy boost.  Coconut oil also has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, which can help enhance immune system function!  Coconut oil can also strengthen hair, as well as protect against and alleviate skin conditions!  Also, this oil can decrease cholesterol levels and increase weight loss because this type of fat (oil) breaks down energy more efficiently in the liver.

Coconut oil is a white, semi-soft solid at or lower than room temperature.  As temperature rises, the solid will transform to oil; it will transform back to solid when the temperature drops or if placed in the refrigerator.  It can be used as cooking oil with stir-frys or meats, or added to smoothies and shakes (2-3 tablespoons).  Coconut oil can be used cosmetically.  Gently apply the oil or soft solid on the skin or around the eyes as anti-aging lotion or as a body moisturizer.  Coconut oil can also be used to alleviate sunburns, minor wounds or bites or to soften flaky, dry areas of skin.

Coconut oil can be purchased at your local organic health food store or online at prices ranging from $10 to $20, depending on the size of the jar.   The shelf life is a year or more, if stored at room temperature.  Be sure to purchase coconut oil that is organic, containing no GMO’s, and is not fermented or hydrogenated to maximize the benefits!  Check out this website that offers 101 Uses for Coconut Oil!
